Phonics and Reading

Phonics at Caldecott

We use the OUP Floppy's Phonics scheme to teach reading and spelling, starting in the Early Years.   The scheme is based on the synthetic phonics approach.

Children learn their sounds in a particular order of progression in line with the scheme and then how to blend them to read whole words.  Each sound (or phoneme) has accompanying actions and a picture card to help children to remember and retain their learning.

Phonics is taught daily in Early Years and Key Stage 1 and, where appropriate, for some children in Key Stage 2.

The sound mats on the website show the progression through the Floppy's Phonics phases.

Reading for Pleasure at Caldecott.

At Caldecott, we love reading! We have a fantastic group of Reading Ambassadors (from Year 1- Year 6) who drive reading and many, many more children who are avid bookworms. Watch out for news of what the Reading Ambassadors have been up to!

We have a Padlet where we share reading recommendations for the whole school community! Children and staff are invited to share their favourite book recommendations here. It is accessible via this link: https://padlet.com/MissMaund1/rg3nmn3mowejiw05
