Puffins

Mrs Eastwood

Mrs Eastwood 1

Welcome to Puffins!

We are a friendly, enthusiastic and hard-working class of year 6 children. Our teacher is Mrs Eastwood, who enjoys maths and reading. In year 6, we also have Mrs Oram and Mrs Carlene to help us on our learning journey.

During the year, we investigate many inspiring topics including Spitfires and Hurricanes (World War Two) and Challenge Caldecott (Morfa Bay). We like to go on visits to support our learning and frequently have visitors and special days in school which are linked to our topic. This is also the year group when we have the opportunity to go on a residential trip to Morfa Bay in Wales.

In our learning, we are always developing and improving our 5Rs:

* Resilience

* Resourcefulness

* Reflectiveness

* Responsibility

* Respect

We also demonstrate the 5Rs beyond the classroom. For example, as the oldest children in the school, we enjoy taking on responsibilities such as being Reading Champions, Maths Ambassadors and House Captains. We also use our resourcefulness to raise money for our end of year celebrations.

We know how important it is to keep fit and healthy and enjoy participating in PE sessions so we need our PE kit (including our water bottles) in school at all times. We love to read so we need to remember to have our reading books in school every day and complete our weekly reading homework. We enjoy using My Maths to practise our maths skills at home.

On 28th February, Puffins visited Oxford Castle to learn about Victorian child prisoners as part of our 'Justice for Jim' topic. The children participated in a workshop where they tried various activities such as oakum picking, the shot drill and doing the laundry using a washboard and mangle. After lunch, the children enjoyed a tour of the castle where they found out more about conditions for prisoners and climbed to the top of the tower for a great view of Oxford.

On Tuesday 5th February, Year 6 held a Dragon's Den style Fab Finish to share the work they have been doing as part of this term's topic 'The Apprentice'. The children worked in teams to design and make working cars, using skills learned in science and DT, and then developed their ideas into a business which they pitched to the 'dragons' (Mrs Stone, Miss Walsh and Mrs Prior). Each team then sold their cars to parents and carers and also sold other items such as cakes and drinks in order to make a profit.

Thank you to parents and carers for donating items to sell and buying your children's cars!

We made mini Christmas cakes using baked bean tins. We used our collaboration skills to work together weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients. We are looking forward to decorating our cakes later this week. Thank you to parents for donations of tins and money for ingredients.

Puffins enjoyed making Woolton Pie, a recipe from World War Two, as part of their topic learning. The children practised a range of skills including measuring, peeling, slicing and grating. All the pies were delicious, although the one with the secret ingredient of hot chilli powder proved to be the most popular!
